IDMC 2010
The Challenge Before Us
We are fast becoming a biblically illiterate society. Even within the Church! Our knowledge of the Word of God is often superficial. Too often, Bible study becomes a place of shared ignorance rather than of sustained investigation and study of God’s Word. We echo what we hear rather than develop deep convictions from a consistent study of the Scriptures.
The Church must be intentional in developing deep, Word-centred disciples.
Charles Spurgeon wrote: “Nobody ever outgrows Scripture: the Book widens and deepens with our years.” The depth of the Bible grows with our devotion and study. We cannot out-grow the Bible.
St. Augustine wrote in a letter to his son (A.D. 412): “Such is the depth of the Christian Scriptures that even if I were attempting to study them and nothing else from early boyhood to decrepit old age, with the utmost leisure, the most unwearied zeal, and talents greater than I have, I would still daily be making progress in discovering their treasures.”
How then do we grow in knowing the Word of God?
What IDMC 2010 Is About
The theme for the IDMC Conference 2010 is “KNOWING GOD’S WORD: Moving from the Huh? to the Wow!” It is all about the centrality of the Word of God in Christian discipleship. It issues a vital call towards a Word-centred discipleship.
But knowing the Word is not the end. George Barna in his book Growing True Disciples levied a legitimate criticism of the contemporary church: “We have defined ‘discipleship’ as head knowledge rather than complete transformation.” Transformation is impossible without the intentional application of God’s Word. It is then that we truly know God through His Word. It is then that we move from the Huh? to the Wow!
The Word is not merely for our information but for our transformation! In the final analysis, knowing the Word is not merely about mastering the Word but rather, about being mastered by the Word. Not merely about knowing the Word of God but about knowing the God of the Word! That’s moving towards the Wow!
